Job Description
Four Summer Garden Interns will assist Urban Sprouts’ staff to: prepare and implement our summer intensive program, maintain our four school gardens over the summer break, and support the 24 parents and students participating in our Health and Nutrition Outreach Team.
Job Responsibilities
· Assist Urban Sprouts and Garden for the Environment staff with preparing and implementing the Summer Sprouts Program, an intensive summer gardening and leadership program for middle and high school youth.
· Support the Health and Nutrition Outreach program participants by attending various community events, working side-by-side with families, and gathering needed resources and materials.
· Assist the Garden Educators with summer garden maintenance of our four sites including hauling, general weeding, harvesting, watering and repairs, and chicken care
· Lead health education activities and cooking demonstrations weekly at the Mission Community Market
· Communicate with Urban Sprouts staff on a regular and ongoing basis about work schedules, expectations and accomplishments.
Desired Skills and Experience
· At least one year of experience or equivalent knowledge of gardening or small-scale food production.
· At least one year of experience mentoring, teaching, or tutoring youth, including in a volunteer capacity.
· Demonstrated responsibility, commitment and initiative in a job, school commitment, or other project.
· Strong oral communication skills, including public speaking skills.
· Ability to work collaboratively and independently, flexible, enthusiastic, creative thinker.
· Bilingual and/or bi-cultural preferred (languages include Spanish, Tagalog, Cantonese).
This is an unpaid internship working 20-25 hours per week from June through August.
