Log Cabin Ranch Garden Education Intern (8-15 hours per week)

Job Description

Urban Sprouts is seeking an Intern with some garden and youth experience to assist our staff in implementing the school garden program at Log Cabin Ranch located in La Honda, CA.  Log Cabin is the San Francisco Juvenile Probation Department post adjudication facility for delinquent male juveniles.

The Garden Education Intern will assist Urban Sprouts’ staff to: prepare for garden-based education classes, mentor and teach groups of youth during classes, maintain the two gardens located within the facility, obtain materials for garden work and cooking during classes, and assist in garden infrastructure projects.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Attend in-school garden-based education classes at Log Cabin Ranch each week. Classes are held every Monday and Wednesday.
  2. Assist the Garden Educators to prepare for educational activities, garden work activities, and food preparation activities before each session of class.
  3. Mentor and support groups of high school students to practice tool safety, interact positively as part of the work team, and complete garden work activities.
  4. Assist the Garden Educators with garden maintenance and preparation of materials, including hauling loads of compost, general weeding, watering and repairs, and other garden maintenance.
  5. Communicating with Urban Sprouts staff on a regular and ongoing basis about work schedules, expectations and accomplishments.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • At least one year of experience or equivalent knowledge of gardening or small-scale food production.
  • Experience working within the juvenile justice system preferred
  • At least one year of experience mentoring, teaching, or tutoring youth, including in a volunteer capacity.
  • Must be available during the schedule class times. Currently every Monday from 12pm-5pm and/or Wednesday from 7:30am-5pm
  • Demonstrated responsibility, commitment and initiative in a job, school commitment, or other project.
  • Strong self-starter and able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong oral communication skills, including public speaking skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently, flexible, enthusiastic, creative thinker.
  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs

This is an unpaid part-time internship working 8-15 hours per week
