Job Opening: Log Cabin Ranch Garden Educator

(20 hours per week, non-exempt part-time/permanent position)

Job Description: Urban Sprouts’ Garden Educator will facilitate the delivery of our core garden-based education curriculum to the residents of Log Cabin Ranch, the San Francisco Juvenile Probation Department post-adjudication facility for delinquent male juveniles located in La Honda, CA.  The Educator will facilitate high school weekly classes at the Ranch—combining environmental science education, nutrition education with hands-on experiences in the facility garden (planting, tending, harvesting, and cooking). The Garden Educator collaborates with Urban Sprouts’ staff and Program Director to build involvement in and commitment to the garden within the Log Cabin Ranch community, which includes teachers, administrators, students, counselors, and other service providers.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Facilitate 3 garden-based education classes per week; one class is held Monday afternoon, and a morning and afternoon session is held on Wednesdays. Classes run year round. 40% of total time
  2. Prepare for each lesson by gathering supplies, worksheets, and reviewing each lesson plan. 20% of total time
  3. Organize and host quarterly Garden Work Days that engages residents, staff, and community volunteers in large garden projects.
  4. Manage the facility garden, plan and prepare for garden work activities, manage cropping schedule, prepare for availability of tools, and other necessary materials.
  5. Build healthy and engaged relationships with Log Cabin Residents and staff to instill a sense of personal accomplishment, responsibility and pride in the Log Cabin Garden Project.
  6. Participate in weekly Urban Sprouts staff meetings, which include professional support, collaborative planning and goal-setting, and completing reporting paperwork in our offices in San Francisco.
  7. Supervise program interns who assist with garden work activities.
  8. Meet with SFUSD teachers and Ranch staff on a monthly basis for assessment, coaching, and program collaboration
  9. Monitor, document, and report on all activities and extent of student and teacher participation to Program Director.

Required Skills and Experience:

  1. At least 2-3 years of facilitation or teaching experience with youth aged 11-17; outdoor group management experience preferred.
  2. Experience working within the juvenile justice system or with adjudicated youth
  3. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations, including youth and adults.
  4. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred.
  5. Capable of working in a fast-paced outdoor environment, and able to lift 25 pounds from floor to table height.
  6. Must submit to a criminal background check
  7. Valid California driver license required.

Desired Skills and Experience

  1. Knowledge and skills in small-scale organic food production or home gardening.
  2. Knowledge of and/or interest in topics including urban gardening, botany, environmental science, health and nutrition, food systems, food access, urban schools, and social justice.
  3. Bilingual and/or bi-cultural preferred (languages include Spanish, Tagalog, Cantonese).
  4. Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking skills.
  5. Strong skills in interpersonal communication, collaboration, and emotional intelligence.
  6. Ability to work independently, be flexible, strive for excellence, and think creatively.
  7. Computer and project management skills.

Please note Urban Sprouts will provide a vehicle for transportation to and from the site.

This is a part-time position working 20 hours per week, $19-21 per hour DOE, and includes vacation and sick leave.
