We are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for our Health and Nutrition Outreach Team. We are looking for parents and students from our six partner schools to join us as we take our garden-based health education into the community.
The Urban Sprouts Health and Nutrition Outreach Team employs parents and students from our six partner schools to serve as peer educators, working within the community at large on pressing health and nutrition issues. This team is trained by Urban Sprouts staff to lead cooking demonstrations, fruit and vegetable tastings, and nutritional activities at school events, community events, and local farmers markets. We are seeking 12 individuals to join us for the summer months. Each indiviual will be asked to work approximately 20 hours between May and October and will receive a $250 stipend.

What is Urban Sprouts?
By cultivating school gardens in San Francisco’s under-served neighborhoods, Urban Sprouts partners with youth and their families to build eco-literacy, equity, wellness, and community.
This year we will work with over 750 youth at six San Francisco public schools: Aptos Middle School, International Studies Academy, June Jordan School for Equity, Log Cabin Ranch, Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, and Ida B. Wells Continuation High School.
Job Description
Urban Sprouts is seeking 12 individuals to join our Health and Nutrition Outreach team. The Health and Nutrition Outreach Workers will partner with Urban Sprouts’ staff to: lead nutrition activities at community events and farmers markets, lead simple cooking demonstrations and tastings to encourage healthy eating, and educate school and community members on healthy food choices, food access, and food justice issues.
Job Responsibilities
- Participate and attend outreach and nutrition education orientation
- Attend and/or lead at least two outreach events each month between May 2011 and October 2011, schedule based on your availability
- Partner with staff and students to lead nutrition education events at our partner school and to the general community
Desired Qualifications
- Interest in improving community health issues and/or personal and family health
- Demonstrated responsibility, commitment and initiative in a job, school commitment, or other project
- Strong oral communication skills; including public speaking skills, or a strong desire to improve and develop these skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently, flexible, enthusiastic, and a creative thinker
- Please note no prior experience necessary, we will provide training on how to become a Health and Nutrition Educator
This is a stipend position working approximately 20 hours total between May 1, 2011 and October 1, 2011 and with a total stipend of $250.
