A Sweet Harvest

Last spring, Urban Sprouts teamed up with San Francisco Beekeeper, Paul Koski, to install a bee hive in the garden at Ida B. Wells.  After learning about the science of bees and beekeeping, students had a chance to suit up in protective clothing to peer into the bee hive and watch the magic happen.  Since its installation, we have harvested over 40 pounds of honey from the school’s hive!  This November was the first time Ida B. students and staff had the opportunity to witness and help out with the honey extraction process, under the guidance of Paul as well as two other beekeepers, Timur and Lawrence, from the San Francisco Beekeepers Association.  To see the entire process, check out our slideshow by clicking the following link: Honey Extraction at Ida B.
