In an effort to reduce the school’s trash output, three bright young 8th graders at Martin Luther King Middle School have chosen to create a compost education project. I am honored to be working with these three and have enjoyed getting to know them. Recently we have been working on

posters which will help students at the middle school sort their waste correctly and emphasize items most don’t traditionally think of as compost like chopsticks and ice cream cartons. These posters will be used as tools when the girls present on the city’s new Zero Waste Initiative in classrooms throughout their school. As part of the project we also plan on spending some time in the cafeteria during lunch time to physically help students sort their trash. Working with these girls in a project-based, small group setting is very rewarding. We have goals, tasks, and check-ins that make us efficient. I am constantly impressed by their dedication and am excited to see the end-result.
