I am happy to be working at the crossroads of community food access, nutrition education, project based learning, environmental stewardship, and agriculture. My work is rooted in community development, agriculture, and natural resources. I focus on organizational leadership, program development and implementation, and institutional advancement.

I served as Associate Director and Banking Information Project Director for Consumer Action, developing statewide education programs on banking and telephone services for immigrant, low income, and elderly consumers. I subsequently earned a Master’s of Science at the University of California, Davis in International Agricultural Development. I conducted fieldwork for my degree in Havana, Cuba in 1995, investigating the contributions of urban food production to the nutritional intake of gardeners’ households as well as the impacts of the gardens on surrounding communities. After graduate school I worked for the University of California (UC) Small Farm Center, the UC Genetic Resources Conservation Program, and co-coordinated the Garden in Every School Conference in 1997. Later, I served as the Deputy Director, Interim Executive Director, and Development Director of The Bay Institute, an advocacy, education, and conservation organization focused on San Francisco Bay and its watershed.

My parents taught me the importance of protecting my family and giving back to my community. By the age of seven I was already exposed to rallies, our legislative system, and advocacy work. Throughout my academic career I advocated for safer school legislation and social equity. It wasn’t until I participated in the Urban Sprouts program at Ida B. Wells that I understood the importance of urban gardening and how it can help create community. Since then I worked with organizations such as, GSANetwork, CUAV, EQCA, SF Mime Troupe, Hidden Villa, and the San Francisco Boys & Girls Club. I am more than excited to work as a Garden Educator for Urban Sprouts.
